How to Start Collecting...

Hi - I'm a recent addict of antique collecting and wanted to share my personal experience with folks that are starting or are wanting to start but cannot quite figure out the first step. You may be wondering how I got started. Let me say that my mother actually started buying and giving me things for my new home when I was a newlywed. I wasn't all that interested 15 years ago. But suddenly, I saw an eBay auction for a beautiful hand painted plate from the early 1900's and just had to have it! I started bidding and lost out. Regardless, that was my defining moment.

My passion for collecting antique porcelain netted me some beautiful pieces that I now display in my home and enjoy every day. That is the point of collecting. When you start, choose something you love and start hunting. If you are still not sure, then ask yourself a few questions. 1) What do I love? 2) What did I love as a child? 3) What is my family history? The history question is important because I feel an affinity for German Porcelain specifically because my ancestors immigrated from Germany in the mid-1850's. This creates a connection to my past.

Whatever it is you have a passion for is what you will enjoy hunting down and buying. This is such a fun past time and one you can share with your whole family. We'll talk more later. For now, answer the questions above which will hopefully give you a better understanding of what direction you want to start collecting. A word of caution tho, it will be hard to stop!! If you would like to see some of the items I have an interest in, visit my store at www.stores.ebay/Victorias-Curio. My Best, Vicki

Beautifully done - and such lovely clear photos! Your idea of "what did you love as a child" is how my whole store started :) Great advice.
